Kassiopi – A sparkling and relaxing holiday destination

Kassiopi harbour

Kassiopi (Greek: Κασσιώπη, Κασσιόπη), is a beautiful small town and tourist resort on the north east coast of Corfu. Kassiopi is part of the municipality of Kassiopaion along with Saint Stefanos, Sinies, and all the way until Nisaki. It has become renowned amongst some very well know English families as well as the neighbour Italians.

About Kassiopi

The town has been vastly developed throughout the years with many Luxury villas, beach houses and apartments available to choose from for accommodation purposes or estate agencies for a more permanent vacation. Furthermore, schooling is provided for all ages, from elementary to college. Many gift shops are available to choose from, as well as a book store, banks with cash points, travel agencies, a police station, doctors and pharmacies as well as many supermarkets.

Nevertheless, the town is also well known for its numerous cafeterias, internet cafés, bars, and restaurants, traditional tavern’s and clubs as well as water sports available in beaches, a scuba diving school and boat renting companies. Also, some tourist attractions consist of a very old fortress and a church, boat cruises to nearby beaches or other nearby islands, Kapareli light house and mount Pantokrator.

Additionally, there are frequent bus services from several locations in the town, going all over the island. Also, there are many taxis available 24 hours every day that run all over the island. The main airport located in Corfu town is approximately 36 km from Kassiopi.

History

The town was founded around the 3rd Century BC during the reign of Pyrrus, King of Epirus, as a supply provider post during his war against the Romans. Later, when the island was conquered by the Romans around the 230 BC, many Emperors paid visit with most prominent Emperor Nero, who visited the temple of Zeus in the town.

The Byzantine castle covers most of the highlands in the centre of the town and runs along most of the coastline, where it can be seen from many beaches alongside. The castle was subsequently fortified further by the Venetians, and survived sieges from the Ottoman Turks in the 1500's. Today the castle is mainly ruinous but constructions to renovate have started since late 2007.
